Hawkes Bullish About Epsom Hopes

Friday, 3rd October 2014

Michael Hawkes, the Sydney-based member of the Hawkes training triumvirate, believes the stable's Epsom Handicap runners, Toydini and Ninth Legion, are genuine winning hopes in the Gr1 feature at Royal Randwick on Saturday, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Bernardini gelding Toydini boasts arguably the stronger form of the pair, coming off a last-start eighth (beaten just 3.6-lengths) behind Sacred Falls in the Gr1 George Main Stakes. "Toydini was very good last time we thought," said Hawkes. "He was probably in the wrong spot too. He wants a good track, which he'll get, and James (jockey James McDonald) is in good form. He's got a very good chance." Hawkes also fancies the chances of Ninth Legion, whose recent placings in the Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes and Gr2 Shannon Stakes suggest a win is not far away. "He's got a terrific chance down in the weights," Hawkes added.
