$10 Million Secured For The Championships Encore
Following the success of its inaugural season in 2014, Sydney's lucrative The Championships has secured crucial funding for next year's follow-up. According to theage.com.au, Racing NSW Chairman John Messara has expressed his delight at the pledge of $10 million from NSW Premier Mike Baird to underwrite the series, commenting: ''We are pleased that the Premier has been able to see what we are in The Championships - a racing event or NSW and Sydney. More important the Premier has made a commitment to give tax relief, which would mean we would not have to go through this process again." Premier Baird noted,''The Championships will become racing's premier event in NSW and the NSW Government is proud to be supporting its continuation. This year over 50,000 people attended the two-day event and, with greater brand awareness and more time to prepare, next year's event is only going to be bigger and better." The statements come in conjunction with a likely move towards possible wagering taxation parity for New South Wales. Should this occur, it would put NSW on an equal footing with Victoria and Queensland, and could swell the State's racing coffers by up to a suggested $70 million a year more.
