Colic Claims Kiwi Star The Phantom Chance
Colic has claimed the life of 1983 Cox Plate winner The Phantom Chance (Noble Bijou-The Fantasy, by Gate Keeper), reports NZ Racing Desk. The multiple Gr1 winner, who was prepared for the most of his career by Colin Jillings, was an outstanding 3YO who claimed the New Zealand Derby, Gr2 Avondale Guineas and Gr1 Wellington Stakes before he beat the older horses in the Gr1 Waikato International Stakes. The following season, The Phantom Chance crossed the Tasman to win Gr1 Turnbull Stakes (defeating Naturalism) before defeating fellow Kiwi galloper Solvit in the WS Cox Plate. The son of Noble Bijou had spent the last 16 years of his life on the Matangi farm of Chris Luoni before succumbing to a severe bout of colic at the age of 25. The Phantom Chance won 11 of his 44 career starts for over $1.6 prize-money.
