Cox Plate Target For Criterion

Friday, 27th June 2014

Trainer David Payne has confirmed the Gr1 WS Cox Plate as the major spring target for Australian Derby winner Criterion (Sebring-Mica's Pride, by Bite the Bullet), reports horseracing.com.au. Criterion was sent straight to the paddock following his Derby success and Payne said he has thrived in his time away from the stable. "He is back and his main mission this year is the Cox Plate," Payne said. "He went out a boy and I think that he has come back a man. He has put on weight and he is a much stronger horse. I am quite excited about the future of him." Criterion was originally bred by Sir Owen Glenn's Go Bloodstock to be a Golden Slipper horse, but the son of Sebring continued to improve when stepped up in trip and Payne soon realised he had a smart young stayer on his hands. Criterion has won five of his 16 career starts to date, including the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas, G2 Todman Stakes & Listed Black Opal Stakes, for over $2 million prize-money.
