Zephyron Ready For Brisbane Cup
John Hawkes is confident that superbly bred galloper Zephyron is ready for his biggest test to date in tomorrow's Gr2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm, reports racingnetwork.com.au. Zephyron, who took his record to 5 wins from 15 starts when winning the Listed Gr3 Premier's Cup (2000m) at Doomben last start, hails from the family of legendary producer Eight Carat and cost a cool $2 million when knocked down to bloodstock agent James Bester at the 2010 NZB Premier Yearling Sale. Hawkes said that the 5YO gelding had done all the stable had asked this preparation and deserved to take his chance. "We have taken him from a Class 1 to Group horse, he was flat-out running five furlongs when we got him," Hawkes said. "He's going to a mile-and-a-half; it's a little bit of a query. He's won at 2200 metres in the Premiers Cup." He added, "We're happy with him, he's trained on really well and providing we get a decent track on the day I think he should run really well. He's a promising young horse and this is a nice race for him at this stage of his career." Hawkes said that Zephyron, co-raced by his breeders Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, could re-emerge in the spring.
