Appearance Wins Gr1 Canterbury Stakes

Monday, 17th March 2014

At Randwick, Gr3-winning & multiple Gr1-placed Darley stallion Commands (Danehill-Cotehele House, by My Swanee) celebrated a Gr1 success when Darley's 5YO mare Appearance (Commands-Disguise, by Grand Lodge) scored by 1.3-lengths for trainer Guy Walter in the $500,000 Gr1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) for 3YO+, over 3YO gelding Not Listenin'tome (Dylan Thomas-Flame of Sydney, by Encosta de Lago) & 6YO mare Red Tracer (Dane Shadow-Kisma, by Snippets). Appearance, who is undefeated in her three starts this campaign, took her record to 9 wins (including the Gr1 Coolmore Classic, Gr1 Queen of the Turf Stakes, Gr1 Myer Classic, Gr2 Apollo Stakes, Gr3 Keith F Nolan Classic, and Gr2 Expressway Stakes) & 3 placings (including the Gr2 Shorts Handicap & Listed Triscay Stakes) from 19 starts for $1,733,430 earnings. Winning trainer Guy Walter was in awe of his stable star, whom he compared to former multiple Gr1 winner Tie The Knot. "She is an outstanding mare. Her record shows that," racingpost.com reported Walter as saying. "She is getting up there with Tie The Knot. I didn't wake up in the morning thinking he would win 13 Group 1 races. But the good horses love to win and get better and better." He added, "We won't be backing her up in the Coolmore next week. It's up to Darley but thoughts are to go to the George Ryder the following week." Star colt Zoustar was subsequently found to have pulled up slightly lame, explaining his disappointing first-up performance.
