Analysing The Pattern System

Friday, 14th March 2014

The 35th Asian Racing Conference in Hong Kong from May 5-8 will include a presentation on the Pattern System, clearly one of the most important structures and institutions in racing's international framework. With Group and Listed races the pinnacle of achievement in the sport and the flow-on effect of black-type the signpost for residual worth in the breeding barn and sales ring, one of the key questions to be posed at the conference is if its use is consistent throughout the world in what is clearly a global marketplace. Discussions and analysis will be led by International Federation Vice Chairman, Brian Kavanagh, and a panel drawn from around the globe will address this and other key issues, including:

  • Is there such a thing as a "pyramid system" in black type
  •  What is the relevance of prizemoney as a benchmark
  •  How ratings are decided on and how they are used
  •  Striking the right balance between domestic race planning and the regional / international pattern
  •  The role of each of the players: IRPAC, SITA, Regional Committees
  •  Establishing "ground rules" for upgrades and demotions of Group and Listed races
  •  Ranking the top 50 races in the world
  •  Has the time come for Super Group 1 races
  •  What is the path for promotion for Part III countries
