Shamus Award Wins Gr1 Australian Guineas
At Flemington in Melbourne, Gr1-winning & dual Gr1-placed Arrowfield Stud stallion Snitzel (Redoute's Choice-Snippets' Lass, by Snippets) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 3YO colt Shamus Award (Snitzel-Sunset Express, by Success Express) scored by 1-length for trainer Danny O'Brien in $500,000 Gr1 Australian Guineas (1600m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colt Criterion (Sebring-Mica's Pride, by Bite the Bullet) & 3YO gelding Thunder Fantasy (Lucky Owners-Pink Pier, by Galileo). Last year's Cox Plate winner took his record to 2 wins (including the Gr1 WS Cox Plate) & 7 placings (including the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas, Gr2 Stutt Stakes, Gr2 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes, Gr3 Maribyrnong Plate, Listed Mitchell McKenzie Stakes & Listed MRC Chairman's Stakes) from 12 starts for $2,453,500 earnings. Bred by Bob Hannon, Shamus Award was purchased by Greg Eurell for $230,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Vinery Stud. "We really have wanted to come here and win this. He's done what very few three-year-olds have done - win a Cox Plate and to back it up in the Guineas puts him in rare air," O'Brien told racingnetwork.com.au. "He is a magnificent individual and his father Snitzel is about to be champion stallion. When he wins races like this we have to make sure he gets every chance to emulate Snitzel one day himself." O'Brien confirmed yesterday that Shamus Award would back up this Saturday in the Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.
