Rachel Alexandra To Miss 2014 Breeding Season
Meanwhile, drf.com reports that Rachel Alexandra will not be covered in 2014. The news was reported by Paulick Report, citing officials from Stonestreet Farm. The 8YO broodmare has experienced complications after each of her two foalings to date that led to stays at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington. The champion mare was rushed to Rood & Riddle the day after her most recent foaling, a filly by Bernardini, last February, where she underwent exploratory abdominal surgery revealing that an area of her small colon had been damaged during the delivery process and developed a bacterial infection. Rachel Alexandra remained at the hospital for almost six weeks, undergoing an additional surgery during her stay, and returned to Stonestreet in late March, while her foal was placed with a nursemare. In 2012, Rachel Alexandra spent a few days at Rood & Riddle for pain management after foaling Jess's Dream. The colt, now a 2YO, is in training at the Stonestreet Training Center in Ocala, Florida. Rachel Alexandra is best known for her exceptional 3YO campaign of 2009, in which she won the Gr1 Kentucky Oaks by more than 20-lengths before being purchased by the late Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables.
