Lea Wins US Gr1 Donn Handicap

Tuesday, 11th February 2014

At Gulfstream Park in the US, 5YO entire Lea (First Samurai-Greenery, by Galileo) scored by 1.5-lengths in track record time for trainer William Mott in the US$500,000 US Gr1 Donn Handicap (9 furlongs) for 4YO+, over 4YO entire Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song-Take Charge Lady, by Dehere) & fellow 5YO entire Veramundo (Stephen Got Even-Etro, by Silver Deputy). Lea took his record to 6 wins (including the Gr3 Hal's Hope Stakes & Gr3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes) and 4 placings (including the Gr2 Firecracker Handicap) from 12 starts for US$709,618 earnings. This was the first Donn victory for Hall Of Fame trainer Mott since champion Cigar won back-to-back renewals during his 16-race winning streak in 1995-96. "It's always a different challenge when you move to the dirt," Mott told bloodhorse.com. "I felt (Lea) was capable, but the competition was stiff and we were in against a champion. We were good enough to beat him today."
