Peter Young First-Up For Fiorente
Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente (Monsun-Desert Bloom, by Pilsudski) will resume in the Gr2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on 22 February, reports horseracing.com.au. The Gr1 Futurity (1400m) on the same day was originally slated as Fiorente's autumn opener, but trainer Gai Waterhouse feels the Peter Young is a more suitable prep race for the 6YO's main target, the Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on 8 March. "I think that we will go to the Peter Young," Waterhouse told Sky Racing HQ yesterday. "The reason being is that his main goal is the Australian Cup and going over the 1800 metres he goes into his rhythm and he won't knock himself about like he would in the short and sharp Futurity." She added, "The Peter Young is winnable and a slightly softer option going into the Australian Cup." Waterhouse says she is delighted with Fiorente's condition and that he is nice and settled at her Melbourne stable since arriving there earlier this week. "He went straight to the box that he won the Melbourne Cup from and he settled in like a pig in mud," Waterhouse said. "I will do some work with him next week."
