Dude Draws Rails For Clark

Thursday, 28th November 2013

Champion US galloper Game On Dude has drawn the coveted rails position for this Friday's 139th running of the US$500,000 Gr1 Clark Handicap (9 furlongs) at Churchill Downs, reports churchilldowns.com. Hall of Famer jockey Mike Smith will travel from California to ride the front-running 6YO for trainer Bob Baffert. The 'Dude' will be out to redeem himself after a disappointing ninth-place finish as favourite in the Breeders' Cup Classic earlier this month, which broke a six-race winning sequence. The Bob Baffert trainee will carry top-weight of 126 pounds (57kg) – the highest Clark impost since dominant favourite Taylor's Special carried the same amount when he was upset by 24-1 longshot Come Summer in the 1986 renewal. Only six of the 14 horses that have carried 126 pounds or higher in the race's history have prevailed. "They've weighted him like he's Horse of the Year, so I guess that's a compliment," Baffert said. Gr1-winning colt Will Take Charge, the D. Wayne Lukas-trained 3YO who will attempt to cement the Eclipse Award as the champion of his age group, is the 9-5 second choice against and will carry 123 pounds (55.7kg) after receiving a three-pound break in the weights because he's a 3YO. Will Take Charge has drawn barrier seven in the field of nine.
