US Champion Royal Delta Retired

Friday, 22nd November 2013

The racetrack career of dual Gr1 Breeders' Cup heroine Royal Delta (Empire Maker-Delta Princess, by A.P. Indy) has come to an end, reports thoroughbreddailynews.com. The mighty mare had her swansong in this month's Gr1 Breeders' Cup Distaff (reverting to its original name after a period when it was called the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic) when beaten by younger US female star Beholder (Henny Hughes). The winner of 12 races (with 6 placings) from 22 starts, Royal Delta captured six Gr1 races: the Alabama Stakes, Breeders' Cup Distaff – twice – Beldame Stakes, Delaware Handicap & Personal Ensign Handicap, on her way to earning almost US$5 million in stakes. Royal Delta changed hands in 2011 when selling for a whopping US$8.5 million to Florida owner Ben Leon at the Keeneland November Sale.
