Champion US Jockey Goes Close In Race Return
The comeback of Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens on Sunday at Santa Anita nearly had a fairy tale finish when his mount Jebrica ran third, missing by only a neck and a nose. Aged 49, Stevens retired in November 2005 after winning 4,888 races, including three Kentucky Derbies and eight Breeders' Cup races. He rode a race for retired jockeys at Santa Anita in October 2008, finishing third behind horses ridden by Sandy Hawley and Jerry Bailey. The champion hoop has been working with a personal trainer to get fit for riding and has said repeatedly in recent days that he does not plan to ride extensively, but hopes to pick up mounts in better quality races.
