Big Brown Half-Brother Impresses With Maiden Win

Monday, 30th July 2012

Vinery shuttler Big Brown's 2YO colt half-brother Afonso de Sousa (Henrythenavigator-Mien, by Nureyev) cracked his maiden at his third start when romping away to a 9-length victory on a firm surface when 4/9 favourite over 6 furlongs at Leopardstown for trainer Aidan O'Brien. A US$300,000 2011 Keeneland yearling, Afonso de Sousa's initial two starts were on softer ground, and O'Brien commented after the event: "This better ground made all the difference, as his sire hated soft ground. He is a possible for the Gr1 Phoenix Stakes." Last week Vinery Australia announced US 2008 Gr1 Kentucky Derby victor & 4-time Gr1-winning shuttler Big Brown (Boundary-Mien, by Nureyev) "will not be returning to Australia for the coming 2012 Southern Hemisphere breeding season" after he "sustained a laceration to a hind leg."
