US Senator Says Racing Has "Run Off the Rails"

Friday, 13th July 2012

In a dramatic US Senate hearing overnight, Democratic Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico declared horse racing has "run off the rails" & needs federal regulation "to control use of medication in racehorses" reported bloodhorse.com. Udall "set the stage for a Senate committee hearing into use of performance-enhancing drugs in racing" with his assertion: "Horse racing has a proud heritage, but the sport has run off the rails. Chronic abuse with pain-killers & other drugs is just plain wrong & dangerous." Udall said the Interstate Horse Racing Improvement Act (of which he is a co-sponsor) would "ban performance-enhancing substances & enact severe penalties for violators". He emphasised Congress "shouldn't tolerate doping & cheating in horse racing".
