UK Stayer & Melb Cup Runner Geordieland Retired

Friday, 29th July 2011

Veteran French-bred & UK-trained 10-year-old stayer Geordieland (Johann Quatz-Aerdee, by Highest Honor) who finished 18th behind Delta Blues in the 2006 Gr1 Melbourne Cup “has been retired after finishing sore” in last night’s Gr2 Goodwood Cup (2 miles) at Goodwood, reported racingpost.com. Geordieland “came home last of the 15 runners & appears to have aggravated the old leg injury that kept him off the track for nearly 2 years”. Geordieland (who arrived in Britain from France in 2006 & was trained by Jamie Osborne) recorded 7 wins (including the UK Gr2 Henry II Stakes over 16.5 furlongs at Sandown Park & UK Gr2 Yorkshire Cup over 14 furlongs at York) & 17 placings (including 3 successive runnings of England's prestigious Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup over 2.5 miles - 2nd in 2007 & 2008, plus 3rd in 2009 – all behind champion stayer Yeats) from 37 starts for £541,601 (A$812,000) earnings.
