Racing Victoria "On Alert" For Hendra Virus

Wednesday, 27th July 2011

Further south, Racing Victoria “is on Hendra virus alert, but is confident an equine influenza-like breakout is unlikely” reported The Herald-Sun. A number of Victorian horses (including Black Caviar) “have returned from Queensland agistment farms - the source of almost all of the outbreaks - in recent weeks”. Racing Victoria chief executive Rob Hines said Victorian trainers “would be sent biosecurity newsletters in the next week to explain protocols for horses who had spent time up north”. Hines said Hendra was “far more serious” than equine influenza (which caused the near-shutdown of Australian racing in 2007) noting: “Hendra can kill horses - and humans for that matter.” However Hines described the possibility of a Hendra outbreak in Victoria as “remote”.
