Cumani Confirms Bauer Again Aims At Melb Cup

Tuesday, 26th July 2011

In the UK, 2008 Gr1 Melbourne Cup runner-up by a nose Bauer (Halling-Dali's Grey, by Linamix) “is back in work at trainer Luca Cumani's Newmarket yard, as he once again starts his preparation for Australia's biggest race” reported racingpost.com. Bauer has been “plagued by injury since his heroic 2nd to the Bart Cummings-trained Viewed” & was “last seen in a Gr3 at Newbury in England last September (2010), after which he travelled back to Australia to have a 2nd crack at the race that stops a nation; however, an injury sustained to his near fore hoof a week before the race eventually ruled him out of the contest, with connections admitting defeat on the morning of the race. Since then he has only been seen on a racecourse twice, but has recently returned to work.” Cumani revealed on his website: “The old boy is starting to show what he is capable of again but, as it was last year when things didn't quite work out, Melbourne is the aim for him again & any race he has here (in the UK) can only be a preparation for Australia, as he has to go into quarantine in September. . . . He holds an entry in the Ebor (Totesport Ebor on August 20) & might well run in that race, but it could well be his 1st run of the season & anyone thinking of backing him at the 20-1 currently available will do well to review his run at Salisbury (last of 5) 1st time out last season back from a long break.”
