Aust Pattern Committee Lifts Winterbottom To Gr1

Monday, 25th July 2011

The Australian Pattern Committee recommended several changes to the Australian Racing Board following a meeting in Sydney. APC chairman Alan Brown noted: “The Committee agreed to a proposal from Racing & Wagering Western Australia that the WA Derby, which had struggled to maintain its Gr1 status, be relegated to Gr2, and the Winterbottom Stakes be upgraded to Gr1. This reflects the reality that many distance races are under pressure to retain competitive fields, unlike good quality sprints. Distance races remain of concern & apart from those recommended for downgrade, a number of races are on the caution list & are being carefully monitored.” Changes recommended to the ARB:

  • Gr2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m Ascot) to Gr1
  • Listed Bow Mistress (1200m Hobart) to Gr3
  • Listed McLachlan Plate (1200m Doomben) to Gr3
  • Listed Epona Stakes (1900m Rosehill) to Gr3
  • Listed Maybe Mahal Stakes (1400m Flemington) to Gr3
  • Listed Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m Rosehill) to Gr3
  • Gr1 WATC Derby (2400m Ascot) to Gr2
  • Gr3 Randwick City Stakes (2000m Randwick) to Listed
  • Gr3 Tasmanian Derby (2200m Hobart) to Listed
  • Listed Toowoomba Cup (2100m Toowoomba) to Unlisted
