Weld Confirms Melb Cup Entry For Sense Of Purpose

Wednesday, 20th July 2011

Irish trainer Dermot Weld confirmed he will enter 4YO mare Sense Of Purpose (Galileo-Super Gift, by Darshaan) for this year’s Gr1 Melbourne Cup following her victory in last week’s Irish Listed Challenge Stakes (14 furlongs) at Leopardstown. Weld (who previously won the Melbourne Cup with Vintage Crop in 1993 & Media Puzzle in 2002) told Sky Sports: “This (Challenge Stakes) is a lucky race for us. We have won it 6 times in the last 10 years. We have won it 4-in-a-row now. Profound Beauty (5th in 2008 Melbourne Cup) & Vinnie Roe (2nd in 2004 Melbourne Cup) won it 3 times each, so Sense Of Purpose had a hard act to follow. She is a very genuine filly, who has improved as the years have gone on. She'll get an entry for the Melbourne Cup. I'm not saying she will go, but she will get an entry. She stays well. Ground wise, she's adaptable, but firm would be best.” Sense Of Purpose currently boasts 3 wins & 5 placings (including June’s Irish Gr3 Noblesse Stakes over 12 furlongs at Cork, plus 2010’s Irish Listed Lenebane Stakes over 12 furlongs at Roscommon & UK Listed Galtres Stakes over 12 furlongs at York, as well as 2009’s Irish Listed Flame Of Tara Stakes over 6 furlongs at The Curragh) from 13 starts.
