Horse Breeders Seek "Fast Track" For Hendra Vaccine

Wednesday, 20th July 2011

Meanwhile NSW north coast horse breeders “want the Federal Government to fast track a vaccine for the Hendra virus” reported abc.net.au. Fifteen people from both Macksville & Wollongbar in northern NSW were exposed to the virus but have been tested & cleared (after 4 horses in NSW have died from the disease over the past 4 weeks). Sue Kerkenzov from the Equine Veterinary Clinic in Ballina “says killing bats will not control the virus” & emphasised: “We can't cut down the fig trees & we wouldn't want to. We certainly wouldn't want to cull the bats, because stress makes it worse for them & we need them in our ecosystem. It's really important that we need a vaccine. The Government must fast track it so that the vets can be vaccinated, so they can go & deal with this.”
