Vic Oaks Day To Start At Later Time
Victoria’s landmark Oaks Day races (on the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup each November) “will start later at 12.20pm & finish at 5.50pm” this year, reported The Herald-Sun. Victoria Racing Club chief executive Dale Monteith said “public feedback had influenced the move”. Last year the 1st race started at 11.10am, but Monteith said the global financial crisis had “affected the Oaks more than other big-race days because it was a working day”. Monteith said the VRC hoped the later start “would enable people to work a half-day before the races, ease transport congestion & boost turnover by up to $1.2 million”. The day’s flagship event, the Gr1 Crown Oaks, will move from race 6 to race 7, starting at 4.25pm. Oaks Day attendance peaked at 110,677 in 2004; last year it was 75,088.
