Vic Jockeys Call For Safety Vest Review

Monday, 18th July 2011

Victorian jockeys “will call for the Australian Racing Board to review the controversial safety vest” reported The Herald-Sun. Victorian Jockeys' Association chief executive Des O'Keeffe confirmed he had an appointment with ARB chief executive Andrew Harding in the 2nd week of August to discuss riding vests & noted: “A number of riders have expressed concerns about the number of back & neck injuries. They need assurance the vests are not contributing to these injuries. They see Michelle Payne, Danny Brereton, Neville Wilson & Darren Gauci with serious neck & spine injuries. Yet (Sydney chairman of stewards) Ray Murrihy says 3 riders in Sydney in the last 6 months have been saved from serious injury because of the vest.” O'Keeffe ‘will relay riders' concerns to Harding” & summed up: “It is time for a review. I am not aware of any studies since 2007. Who sets the standards & are there other options are questions that need to be asked.”
