Monday, 18th July 2011

In the US, multiple Gr1-winning former shuttler Hawk Wing (Woodman-La Lorgnette, by Val De L'Orne) added a US Gr1 triumph when Irish-bred daughter Cambina (Hawk Wing-Await, by Peintre Celebre) came from last-in-running to get up in the last stride & dead-heat with front-running Nereid (Rock Hard Ten-Dowry, by Belong To Me) in a 5-way photo-finish to the US$250,000 Gr1 American Oaks (10 furlongs on turf) for 3YO fillies at Hollywood Park in California. Cambina (ridden by Martin Garcia for trainer Jeff Bonde) & Nereid (ridden by Joseph Talamo for trainer John Shirreffs) scored by a head from Star Billing (Dynaformer-Topliner, by Thunder Gulch). Cambina took her record to 5 wins (also including April’s Gr2 Providencia Stakes over 9 furlongs at Santa Anita & March's Listed China Doll Stakes over 8 furlongs at Santa Anita) & 3 placings (in June’s Gr2 Honeymoon Handicap over 9 furlongs at Hollywood Park & May’s Gr3 Senorita Stakes over 8 furlongs at Hollywood Park, plus 2010's Irish Listed Flame Of Tara Stakes over 6 furlongs at The Curragh) from 11 starts for US$352,857 earnings. And Nereid (a US$190,000 yearling at the 2009 Keeneland September Sale) took her record to 3 wins & a runner-up from 4 starts for US$168,800 earnings.
