Sydney Won't Copy Melb "Gr1 Free Entry" Plan

Friday, 15th July 2011

Meanwhile the Australian Turf Club “has no plans to emulate the Melbourne Racing Club’s bold experiment to throw open the gates for a Gr1 day” reported The Daily Telegraph. Earlier this week MRC chairman Mike Symons revealed plans to allow free entry for the Gr1 Underwood Stakes meeting on September 17 & the newspaper noted: “Some see this is as a glimpse of racing’s future – free entry for all race meetings. A school of thought is that admission prices, particularly those that are hiked up for Gr1 days, are too high & should be abolished.” But ATC chief executive Darren Pearce said letting punters in for free “does not necessarily equate to a rise in attendances” & noted: “Midweek meetings at Royal Randwick & Warwick Farm are free & they attract no more crowd than Canterbury where admission applies. The MRC is a trial for 1 day to overcome competition from AFL finals. They admit it will lead to losses that will need to be offset from their Taberet/hotel profits.”
