Katter Says "Kill All Flying Foxes In Urban Areas"

Thursday, 14th July 2011

North Queensland’s Independent federal MP Bob Katter “says his new Australian Party would kill all flying foxes in urban areas to help stop the spread of the deadly Hendra virus & other diseases” reported The Courier-Mail. Katter (currently in the process of registering his Australian Party & hoping to stand candidates at the next state election) declared his party would “carry out mass culling” to protect the health of Queenslanders, amid a new cluster of Hendra cases killing horses in Queensland & NSW, while dozens of people who had exposure to the sick horses await test results to learn if they've been infected. Katter emphasised: “We will remove all flying foxes from populated areas. Whether we shoot them, or what we have to do, that is a decision for the future.” Katter also threatened the state Labor government with “legal action for failing to protect the health of Queenslanders”. He said 3 people had died in north Queensland in the past 18 months from leptospirosis (which can be carried by flying foxes) & revealed: “We're sending letters to Mr (Jeff) Seeney as Leader of the Opposition & to the Premier Anna Bligh & we're saying that we are now proceeding to raise money to carry out legal action.”
