Turnbull Stakes Flemington Meet To Start At 10.30am

Wednesday, 13th July 2011

The Melbourne Spring carnival's 1st big meeting, Turnbull Stakes day at Flemington, “will be run in a radical timeslot” after Victoria Racing Club chief executive Dale Monteith confirmed “the 1st race would be at 10.30am & the last of 8 at 2.30pm because of a date clash with next door's Royal Melbourne Show” reported The Herald-Sun. The meeting (on Sunday October 2) features the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes & 3 Gr2 races. The newspaper noted: “Tabcorp is at loggerheads with the VRC over the unprecedented timeslot for a Victorian metropolitan meeting.” And Tabcorp general manager of marketing Ian Mackay declared: “We estimate the impact to be up to 30% of the expected turnover on the meeting, which equates to some millions of dollars. . . . The impact was advised to Racing Victoria & VRC some time back, so they've reached their decision factoring this in.”
