New Hendra Death At Cairns In Qld
In Australia, Biosecurity Queensland chief officer Jim Thompson confirmed another horse has died from Hendra virus on a property west of Cairns, in an area unrelated to the other recent Queensland outbreaks. Thompson noted: “This case is a little bit different than the others in that it’s in north Queensland. On Sunday a horse was sick & it was visited by a vet, samples were taken, the horse was depressed, wobbly & showed neurological symptoms & the horse died on Monday morning.” Samples tested at the BioSecurity Queensland laboratories confirmed “it is positive for Hendra virus”. Thompson added: “We believe there are a significant number of horses on the property, probably in the vicinity of 30.” The affected property is owned by Liberal National Party candidate Michael Trout, who with his brother & 4 staff “are undergoing tests for Hendra”.
