Star Witness Heads To Widden Stud

Monday, 11th July 2011

The Danny O’Brien-trained Australian sprinter Star Witness (who in his previous 2 UK starts finished 2nd in the Gr1 King's Stand Stakes over 5 furlongs at Royal Ascot & then 3rd in the Gr1 Golden Jubilee Stakes over 6 furlongs at Royal Ascot) struggled to finish off the tough uphill final furlongs at Newmarket to cross the line 10th. In the betting ring, he had replaced Delegator (5th) for favouritism at 4-1, but Australian jockey Steven Arnold commented: “There was no speed early on. He was a little bit plain today & I'm disappointed.” Star Witness now returns to Australia to begin his stallion career at Widden Stud in the NSW Hunter Valley. The other Australian-bred runners in the Gr1 July Cup were 7YO gelding War Artist (Orpen-Royal Solitaire, by Brocco) who finished 7th & 3YO colt Elzaam (Redoute's Choice-Mambo In Freeport, by Kingmambo) who finished 8th.
