Free Entry To Boost Crowds At Caulfield & Sandown

Monday, 11th July 2011

Free entry for Underwood Stakes day at Caulfield in September & all Sandown mid-week meetings “headlines a bold bid by Melbourne Racing Club to boost racecourse attendances” reported The Herald-Sun. MRC chairman Mike Symons confirmed the club was “aiming for more than 20,000 for the Underwood meeting on September 17” & noted; “We want to promote the day & get people to focus on the Spring carnival. I know we are competing with footy finals, but most are played at night. We would hope to get 20,000 plus, but that will still be weather dependent. If it works, we will do it every year. We want people to get into a mindset - it's Underwood Stakes, it's free, you are going to watch Gr1 racing at a premium track.” Symons admitted the Underwood move was “a financial gamble”, but said revenue from the club's 11 gaming venues “would help absorb any losses”. Free admittance to Sandown mid-week meetings “will apply from the start of the new season on August 1”.
