Monday, 11th July 2011

Dual Gr1-winning former Australian champion 1st-season sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill-Patrona, by Lomond) added a UK black-type success when Irish-bred 5YO gelding Masamah (Exceed And Excel-Bethesda, by Distant Relative) prevailed in a 3-way photo-finish to the £30,000 (A$45,000) Listed John Smith’s City Walls Stakes (5 furlongs) at York. Masamah (ridden by Philip Makin for trainer Kevin Ryan) scored by a neck from 5YO entire Amour Propre (Paris House-Miss Prim, by Case Law) with a further nose to 6YO gelding Hamish McGonagall (Namid-Anatase, by Danehill). Masamah was a 60,000 guineas (A$93,000) yearling at the 2007 Doncaster Bloodstock August Sale & later a 30,000 guineas (A$47,000) 3YO at the 2009 Tattersalls Horses-In-Training Sale. Overall he now has 7 wins (also including 2010’s Listed Queensferry Stakes over 6 furlongs at Chester) & 2 placings from 19 starts for £122,643 (A$) earnings.
