Essington Wins Ascot Handicap

Monday, 11th July 2011

Flagship Arrowfield Stud stallion & last season’s Australian Champion Sire Redoute's Choice (Danehill-Shantha's Choice, by Canny Lad) added a black-type quinella when favoured 4YO gelding Essington (Redoute's Choice-Besame Mucho, by Encosta De Lago) scored by a half-neck in the $80,000 Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm. Top-weighted Essington (ridden by Chris Munce for trainer Darryl Hansen) defeated fellow 4YO geldings Metallurgical (Redoute's Choice-Lady Capel, by Last Tycoon) & Tierqualo (Sequalo-Tiercette, by Tierce). Essington (a $150,000 yearling consigned by Princes Farm at the 2008 Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney) took his record to 10 wins (also including February’s Listed Falvelon Stakes over 1200m at Eagle Farm) & 5 placings from 18 starts for $300,800 earnings. (Click on the link for full race details from Group Race Results at AAP Racing.) Meanwhile the Essington-Metallurgical quinella (plus a Melbourne win by 3YO filly Maraaseem) elevated Redoute's Choice to 2nd position on this season’s Australian General Sires' list (behind Lonhro, but now ahead of High Chaparral). Redoute's Choice has finished 5 of the last 6 seasons among Australia's top 3 sires by prize-money.
