Dream Ahead Wins UK Gr1 July Cup

Monday, 11th July 2011

In the UK, Australia’s dual Gr1-winning 3YO colt Star Witness (Starcraft-Leone Chiara, by Lion Hunter) finished 10th in the field of 16 runners in his final racetrack start, as US-bred 3YO colt Dream Ahead (Diktat-Land Of Dreams, by Cadeaux Genereux) burst clear in the final 100m to scored a half-length victory over his older rivals in the £400,000 (A$600,000) Gr1 July Cup (6 furlongs) at Newmarket. Dream Ahead (ridden by Hayley Turner for trainer David Simcock) defeated 4YO entire Bated Breath (Dansili-Tantina, by Distant View) & Irish-bred 6YO gelding Hitchens (Acclamation-Royal Fizz, by Royal Academy). Dream Ahead (last season’s UK joint-champion 2YO) was originally a US$11,000 yearling at the 2009 Keeneland September Sale & subsequently a £36,000 (A$54,000) 2YO at the 2010 Doncaster Bloodstock April Breeze-Up Sale. Overall he now boasts 4 wins (also including both 2010’s Gr1 Shadwell Middle Park Stakes over 6 furlongs at Newmarket & French Gr1 Prix Morny over 1200m at Deauville) from 6 starts for £528,688 (A$793,00) earnings. Meanwhile Turner, 28, became just the 2nd female jockey to win a British Gr1 (after Alex Greaves who dead-heated in the 1997 Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes).
