Greens Bill In SA Parliament To Ban Jumps Racing

Thursday, 7th July 2011

The Greens have launched a campaign against jumps racing in South Australia & “will introduce a bill to State Parliament this week to ban the sport” reported abc.net.au. Greens MP Tammy Franks said members of both major parties “have shown interest” in a ban, with some attending a forum on the issue at Parliament House. She noted: “We had members of all the political parties & the independents turn up to hear what we had to say. I think South Australia has never really debated this issue in our Parliament. It's clearly been a point of contention in Victoria. We've got all of the research from Victoria that shows that this is not a sustainable industry.” SA state president of the RSPCA Sheree Sellick added: “Research shows people overwhelmingly are opposed to jumps racing & want it banned. The industry itself is being threatened because people are stopping going to races because of the jumps racing component.” However Thoroughbred Racing South Australia chairwoman Frances Nelson said there “is widespread support for jumps racing in South Australia” & emphasised: “We do our best to minimise the risks & it's constantly under review. The actual fatality rate since 2005 on our latest figures is 0.96%.”
