30% Of Flying Fox Colony Near Outbreak Have Hendra

Wednesday, 6th July 2011

While there are “still many unanswered questions about the rare & lethal Hendra virus, scientists do know it's spread to horses by flying foxes” noted abc.net.au. “In an attempt to get to the bottom of these latest outbreaks, samples have been taken from a flying fox colony close to one of the outbreaks. It was found 30% of the flying foxes were infected with the virus, the highest proportion scientists have ever seen.” As a result, Queensland's chief vet Dr Rick Symons “is pleading with horse owners to be vigilant” declaring: “Keep your horses away from where flying foxes can roost. Don't feed your horses under trees where there are flying foxes, don't provide water under trees that have got flying foxes in them.”
