Melb Cup Will Remain "Richest Staying Race"
The Herald-Sun also asked new VRC chairman Michael Burn: “The Melbourne Cup was worth $3 million in 2000 & $6 million this year. What is your estimate of its stake-money in 2020 & do you favour a cap on internationally trained Cup runners?” Burn replied: “I wouldn't like to put a precise number on what it might be worth, but there is a deep commitment to keep it the richest staying race in the world. Last year it was the highest-rated staying race in the world & we would like keep it that way. I think the number of international runners is largely self-solving. The challenge of coming here is not to be under estimated. The refinements we continue to make, including the later declaration of weights, will give us the best possible in-form runners.”
