Aust-Bred Igugu Wins South Africa Gr1 Durban July

In South Africa’s premier annual race, former shuttler & Gr1 English Derby winner Galileo (Sadler's Wells-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) added a Gr1 triumph when boom Australian-bred 3YO filly Igugu (Galileo-Zarinia, by Intikhab) scored a 1-length victory over her older rivals in the R3 million (A$390,000) Gr1 Durban July (2200m) at Greyville. Igugu (ridden by Anthony Delpech for trainer Mike De Kock) defeated 4YO gelding Pierre Jourdan (Parade Leader-Vin Fizz, by Qui Danzig) & 3YO gelding English Garden (Camden Park-Royal Habit, by Dominion Royale). At her previous 3 starts Igugu (a $65,000 yearling at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale) thrashed her rivals by 10.25-lengths in March's Gr1 SA Fillies Classic (1800m) at Turffontein, then by 5.75-lengths in the April’s Gr2 South African Oaks (2450m) at Turffonetin & finally by 2.75-lengths in June’s Gr1 Woolavington 2000 (2000m) for 3YO fillies at Greyville to become the 1st filly in SA history to win all 3 legs of the Triple Tiara; overall she now boasts 8 wins (also including February's Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas over 1600m at Turffontein & 2010's Gr3 Johannesburg Spring Challenge over 1450m at Turffontein) & 2 runners-up (including 2010's Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth) from 10 starts for R4,071,875 (A$529,000) earnings.
