Canford Cliffs Wins UK Gr1 Queen Anne Stakes
Also in the UK overnight, boom Irish-bred 4YO entire Canford Cliffs (Tagula-Mrs Marsh, by Marju) notched his 2nd successive Gr1 triumph since returning from a 10-months lay-off with a 1-length victory in the £250,000 (A$383,000) Gr1 Queen Anne Stakes (8 furlongs) for 4YOs & up at Royal Ascot. Canford Cliffs (ridden by Richard Hughes for trainer Richard Hannon) defeated the Werthheimer family's 13-time Gr1-winning Irish-bred 6YO mare Goldikova (Anabaa-Born Gold, by Blushing Groom) who won this race last year & 5YO entire Cityscape (Selkirk-Tantina, by Distant View). Canford Cliffs was a €46,000 (A$63,000) weanling at the 2007 Goffs November Sale & later a £50,000 (A$77,000) yearling at the 2008 Doncaster August Sale. Canford Cliffs now has 7 wins (also including May’s Gr1 Lockinge Stakes over 8 furlongs at Newbury, plus 2010's Gr1 Sussex Stakes over 8 furlongs at Goodwood, Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes over 8 furlongs at Royal Ascot & Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at The Curragh, as well as 2009's UK Gr2 Coventry Stakes over 6 furlongs at Royal Ascot) & 3 placings (in 2010's UK Gr1 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at Newmarket & Gr3 Greenham Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newbury, plus 2009's French Gr1 Prix Morny over 1200m at Deauville) from 10 starts for £887,223 (A$1.357m) earnings.
