Mawatheeq Retired To UK Nunnery Stud

Friday, 1st October 2010

US-bred 5YO stallion Mawatheeq (Danzig-Sarayir, by Mr Prospector) who was runner-up in last season's UK Gr1 Champion Stakes will begin his stallion career next year at his owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's Nunnery Stud in Norfolk under the Shadwell banner, alongside Aqlaam, Green Desert, Haafhd, Nayef & Sakhee," reported racingpost.com. Mawatheeq (who retires with 4 wins & 2 runners-up from 9 starts) "hails from one of Sheikh Hamdan's best families: Ghanaati (his half-sister by Giant's Causeway) won last year's Gr1 English 1000 Guineas & Rumoush (his half-sister by Rahy) won the Feilden Stakes in April & ran 2nd in the Park Hill Stakes last time out". And his dam Sarayir is a Listed-winning half-sister to Nashwan, Nayef & Unfuwain, out of blue hen Height Of Fashion. Sheikh Hamdan's racing manager Angus Gold commented: "We were very hopeful Mawatheeq was going to make up into a top-class older horse this year, but unfortunately a recurrence of his old injury put paid to that & Sheikh Hamdan has now taken the decision to retire him to stud."
