Jockey Greg Childs Retires With 72 Gr1 Wins
Jockey Greg Childs announced he will retire after tomorrow's meeting at Flemington in Melbourne. Childs, 46, was born in New Zealand & began riding as an apprentice in 1978 (indentured to Brian Deacon at Hawera) & won the NZ apprentice title in the 1979-80 season. He moved to Melbourne in 1990 & won the Melbourne jockey premiership in both 1991-92 & 1997-98. Overall he has notched 72 Gr1 winners among over 2,100 victories (including overseas success in the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia & Dubai), as well as piloting multiple champion racemare Sunline in 21 of her successes. Childs (who has 2 children) told the media: "I have given it 110% over the years, but I've lost the aggression to chase good rides & to get out & make it happen. I've climbed to the top of the mountain, but now the time has come to hang my boots up & go on with other things in my life."
