New Approach Wins Ireland Horse-Of-Year
In Ireland, Princess Haya Of Jordan's 3YO colt New Approach (Galileo-Park Express, by Ahonoora) was named 2008 Horse-Of-The-Year at the Irish Horse Racing Awards in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. New Approach won this year's UK Gr1 English Derby (12 furlongs) at Epsom Downs, as well as defeating older rivals in both the Irish Gr1 Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Leopardstown (by 6-lengths setting a new course record) & UK Gr1 Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket. New Approach (whose Gr1-winning dam Park Express has produced 7 winners, also including Japanese stakes-winning former Glenlogan Park shuttler Shinko Forest & Irish Gr3-winner Dazzling Park) was a €430,000 (A$817,000) yearling at the 2006 Goffs Million Sale; last season he notched 5 wins from 5 starts (including the UK Gr1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newmarket & Irish Gr1 National Stakes over 7 furlongs at The Curragh, as well as both Ireland's Gr2 Futurity Stakes over 7 furlongs at The Curragh & Gr3 Tyros Stakes over 7 furlongs at Leopardstown). At the end of that season Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Darley operation bought New Approach as a stallion prospect & this year he has also finished runner-up in both the UK Gr1 2000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at Newmarket & Irish Gr1 2000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at The Curragh, as well as finishing 3rd in the UK Gr1 Juddmonte International Stakes (10 furlongs) at Newmarket. He has now retired to Sheikh Mohammed's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £30,000 (A$72,000).
