Stewards Probe Treatment To Melb Cup 2nd Bauer

Wednesday, 3rd December 2008

Racing Victoria chairman of stewards confirmed last night that an investigation has begun into veterinary treatment given to UK stayer Bauer prior to his head-bobbing 2nd-placing last month's Gr1 Melbourne Cup. Bauer (trained by Luca Cumani & whose owners include former Australian test cricketer Simon O'Donnell) was stabled at the Sandown racecourse quarantine centre prior to the Cup & Bailey told The Daily Telegraph: "We do need to clarify some issues." The newspaper noted "it is believed the investigation is not drug-related, but the treatment could still break Australian Rules Of Racing. If so, Bauer would be disqualified (& lose $835,000 prize-money)". Bauer's managing owner Terry Henderson emphasised: "There is no issue with the swabs taken from the horse. Any treatment given leading up to the Cup was done by vets appointed to the international horses by Racing Victoria. We are concerned by the investigation, but feel comfortable nothing wrong has been done at our end."
