Midnight Lute Wins US Gr1 Breeders' Cup Sprint
Former Vinery Stud shuttler & 1998 Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet (Quiet American-Really Blue, by Believe It) added a US Gr1 triumph when 5YO entire Midnight Lute (Real Quiet-Candytuft, by Dehere) rallied from last in the field of 8 to notch a 1.75-lengths victory in the US$2 million Gr1 Breeders' Cup Sprint (6 furlongs on all-weather) at Santa Anita & also take this coveted sprinter's crown for the 2nd year in succession (a feat no other sprinter has achieved in the 25-year history of the Breeders' Cup series). Midnight Lute (ridden by Garrett Gomez for trainer Bob Baffert) defeated Gr3-winning 3YO gelding Fatal Bullet (Red Bullet-Sararegal, by Regal Classic) & Gr1-winning 4YO entire Street Boss (Street Cry-Blushing Ogygian, by Ogygian). Last season Kentucky-bred Midnight Lute (named after University Of Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson) duly collected the US Eclipse Award for Champion Male Sprinter after victories in both the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Sprint (6 furlongs) & Gr1 Forego Handicap (7 furlongs), plus 2nd in the Gr1 Cigar Mile Handicap (8 furlongs). In 2006 he had also won the Gr3 Perryville Stakes & placed in the Gr1 Malibu Stakes. Overall Midnight Lute took his record to 6 wins & 4 placings from 13 starts for US$2,690,600 earnings.
