Cefalu Wins JRA Cup

Monday, 29th September 2008

Former Chilean Derby winner & now 7YO gelding Cefalu (Dushyantor-Cristal, by Semenenko) caused a major upset when he led all-the-way & just held on to snatch victory by a nose at odds of 100-1 in the $100,000 Listed JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley. Cefalu (ridden by Luke Nolen for trainer Lee Freedman) defeated 5YO gelding Majestical (Montjeu-Grosvenor's Pride, by Grosvenor) & 5YO mare Devil Moon (King Cugat-Classy Babe, by Masterclass). Cefalu (imported to Australia in late 2005 by Terry Henderson & Simon O'Donnell's OTI Racing) took his record to 6 wins (also including 2005's Gr1 Chilean Derby) & 9 placings (including March's Gr2 Adelaide Cup over 3200m at Morphettville, plus both 2007's Gr3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2500m at Flemington & Listed D'Urban Quality Stakes over 1700m at Caulfield, as well as 2005's Argentina Gr1 Gran Premio Internacional Asociation Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubs) from 49 starts for $317,240 earnings.
