Aust Trainers Seek Owner Registration Policy

Tuesday, 19th August 2008

The Australian Trainers Association has called for racing authorities to introduce a national registration policy for racehorse owners, following last week's report by Judge Gordon Lewis into organised crime links with Victorian racing. ATA chief executive John Alducci declared: "The ATA has called for all owners to be registered to ensure that undesirables are excluded from racehorse ownership. We are not going to tolerate the situation where trainers take the blame when undesirable, criminal or rogue elements can slip through, mainly because of a total lack of proper scrutiny, to become racehorse owners. Trainers cannot be expected to do the job of regulators & conduct probity checks on owners. It is up to the controlling bodies to undertake probity checks whenever a new owner registers a racehorse."
