Fallon Book Withdrawn Over Libel Claim
A legal row has erupted in Britain over a newly published biography of controversial jockey Kieren Fallon. Lawyers for the former champion rider "have complained to Orion, publishers of the book by Andrew Longmore, that it repeats a libel for which one newspaper has already paid undisclosed damages," reported guardian.co.uk. In Kieren Fallon: The Biography Of The Controversial Jockey, Longmore repeats a false allegation by former jockey Stuart Webster that Fallon launched an unprovoked attack on him in the weighing room at Beverley in 1994; Fallon has never denied an altercation took place, but always maintained he acted in self-defence. In 2004, Britain's News Of The World published Webster's claim that he had been assaulted, but 2 years later the paper issued an apology to Fallon "acknowledging the falsity of the allegation". Longmore's book, however, reprints Webster's quotes without reference to the subsequent retraction. Solicitors acting for Orion have now advised Fallon's lawyers that they were "immediately looking into the matter" & in the meantime, steps were being taken to recall unsold copies.
