Japan Foals Day-2: US$952k Deep Impact Colt

Thursday, 17th July 2008

Sendai-based businessman Takaya Shimakawa (who runs a natural foods company) paid top price if ¥100 million (US$952,000) for a colt from the 1st-crop of multiple Gr1-winner & dual Japanese Horse-Of-The-Year Deep Impact (out of Gr1-winning 11-year-old Polish Precedent mare Mill Grain) during yesterday's closing session at the 3-day Japan Racing Horse Association July select Sale (1 day of yearlings followed by 2 days of foals) at the Northern Horse Park on the island of Hokkaido. The colt (consigned by Shadai Farm) is a 3/4-brother to Fine Grain (winner of this year's Japanese Gr1 Takamatsuomiya Kinen in March) & his dam Mill Grain is a full-sister to Pure Grain (winner of the Gr1 Irish Oaks & Gr1 English Oaks). Shimakawa commented: "This is the lot which I liked the most in the catalogue. When I visited Shadai Farm to inspect their consignments, I fell in love with this colt & Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm strongly recommended him, saying this is one of the best Deep Impact foals. I was determined to buy him".
