Trainer Collins Fined $18k But 9-Months Drug Ban Lifted

Monday, 26th May 2008

Cranbourne trainer John Collins won an appeal against a 9-months disqualification imposed by Queensland stewards after he became the 1st Australian trainer charged for a horse testing positive to steroid-related drug hydroxyprogesterone caproate (HPC). Collins-trained Royal Flag, Devastating & Art Success all tested positive to HPC on Queensland tracks, but on appeal his $9,000 fine was doubled to $18,000, but he is free to continue training.  HPC grabbed international headlines after Takeover Target was refused a start in Hong Kong in December 2006; Australia did not test for HPC up to the Takeover Target incident, but testing was widened last year to include it from February 1 this year.
