Meanwhile the catastrophic injuries suffered by Gr1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles immediately after the race (highlighted by the nation-wide televising of the race) continue to trigger heated industry debate & day-by-day headlines in the US. The controversy is especially fierce, coming so soon after the passionate national debate following the similarly dramatic on-track accident (again in a nationally-televised race) involving 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro in the Preakness Stakes. Respected commentator Andrew Beyer wrote in the Washington Post: "America's breeding industry is producing increasingly fragile thoroughbreds.
